Laser scans for flood protection
The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Climate Protection (MLUK) has published an article on its website about the planned survey of Brandenburg's dikes, in which BSF Swissphoto is also involved:
"On behalf of the State Office for the Environment (LfU), dikes on the Oder, Spree, Lausitzer Neiße and their branch waters will be surveyed using Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) over a total length of 690 kilometres. A laser installed on an aircraft records the surface of the terrain. In just eight days of flight, high-resolution data accurate to the centimetre are produced, which provide an important basis for flood protection."
"...With the highly accurate data, dike and terrain contours can be mapped even better than before. These provide a valuable basis both for modelling, especially of floods, and for analysing the conditions of flood protection facilities. In this way, any requirements for the upgrading or maintenance of dikes, such as dike deficiencies, can be identified. In addition, the State Office uses the data for updating the risk areas and maps within the framework of the implementation of the Flood Risk Management Directive as well as for the assessment of hazard situations in the event of a flood."
